Art of an MBA

JOCHEN RUNDE,DIRECTOR,MBA PROGRAMME,CAMBRIDGE JUDGE BUSINESS SCHOOL,SPEAKS TO TIRNA RAY ABOUT A NEW CULTURAL,ARTS AND MANAGEMENT (CAM) CONCENTRATION PROGRAMME TO HELP STUDENTS DEVISE MODELS FOR THE COMMERCIALISATION OF CULTURAL GOODS

Why did the Cambridge Judge Business School introduce a cultural, arts and management (CAM) programme as part of its new concentration courses

We wanted to provide a little more thematic definition to what was formerly a wide range of elective choices at the end of the programme . That is why we introduced various concentrations to do this (eight of them in standard areas such as finance, consulting and entrepreneurship , and in less standard areas such as cultural and arts management, beyond-for-profit and energy and the environment ). Each concentration is headed by a senior faculty member or practitioner coach.

How are concentration programmes likely to help MBA students

The concentrations will allow students to focus on areas in which they have a particular interest . It will give them the opportunity to put together what they have learned over the course of their whole MBA in a final, holistic capstone project. The concentrations will also be ideal for networking purposes, as they will provide the opportunity to engage with senior practitioners from each concentration area, in projects, talks and seminars. The CAM concentration will be bringing in a number of senior figures from the Arts, for example, and a number of the cases that will be taught are actually studies of aspects of the organisations these figures lead.

Are you tying up with the industry to equip students with practical skills

The CAM Capstone project is practical. The increasingly entrepreneurial spirit of major (publicly subsidised) cultural organisations is encouraging their senior managers to take calculated risks in seeking to exploit for profit the intellectual property which they own or control . So the kind of questions that students will address is how these cultural goods can compete in a crowded entertainment marketplace, and how cultural organisations might develop a sustainable business model for the widespread (and profitable) distribution of their work.
During the Capstone project, students will analyse examples of initiatives in both the subsidised and commercial environments and devise viable models for the commercialisation of cultural goods, looking at areas such as pricing, new product opportunities, marketing , competition, technology and profitability.

When are the classes for
CAM starting and what are the eligibility criteria

The classes will be starting in the next Easter term, which means that the current MBA class will be benefiting from them. Any MBA student on the Cambridge MBA course can elect to take the CAM concentration. And as it forms part of the standard Cambridge MBA, normal MBA fees apply.
