CAT results pushed back by one week
Mumbai: The results of the Common Admission Test (CAT), scheduled to be released by the third week of February, have been postponed. Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad officials said the results were now expected only next week.
This years CAT, which went online for the first time, was marked by several glitches and authorities were forced to take a retest a few days ago. So, the delay in publication of results has come as a final indictment of the new system for a lot of candidates. Close to 2.41 lakh students have taken the test a gateway to not just the IIMs but around 80 other B-schools that select candidates on the basis of their scores in this exam.
Technology is supposed to take a process forward, not beat them down slow, said a student from Podar College who took the test this year.
The 33-year-old paper-pencil procedure was done away with this time and an online exam was held from November 27 to December 7.Several candidates had a harrowing time, with servers not being able to shoulder the burden.
The IIMs later had to slate a retest for January 30 and 31 for about 11,000 candidates who faced problems when the original exam was conducted. At that time, the IIMs had announced that the results would be out by the third week of February. But, now, it seems candidates will have to wait even longer.
The evaluation has recently been concluded. But each IIM needs to finalise the names of shortlisted candidates who they would call for the second stage (personal interview and group discussion) and that will take some more time, an IIM official said, explaining the delay.
Heads of other institutes who accept CAT scores are upset with the snafu. We pay the IIMs to access the CAT scores. But the delay has thrown our admission schedule out of gear, said the head of a Bangalore-based institute.
Students have been the worst hit. Pankti Pradhan said, the anxiety about the entire admission process is weighing down on me. Results of so many B-schools are out and one does not know whether to pay the fees and book a seat there or wait for the IIMs to reveal the CAT scores. No one wants to miss out getting into the IIMs. |
