IIMs to split admission process into 2 phases

Mumbai: Under tremendous pressure to release the results of lakhs of students who have taken the Common Admission Test (CAT), the Indian Institutes of Management will for the first time split their admission process into two phases.

The scores of all the students will be released by Thursday or Friday. Each IIM will short-list candidates and is likely to invite them for group discussion as well as a personal interview by the end of the month.

So, for thousands of top-scoring candidates looking to join the IIMs, the wait just got longer. A faculty member at IIM-Ahmedabad said, if a candidate is only looking at joining an IIM, s/he is not going to know which of the IIMs are going to give him/her a call immediately. The IIMs have decided to release the scores so that the admission process in other B-schools around the country can start. Close to 80 management institutes select students based on their performance in the CAT.

According to the previously announced schedule, the IIMs were to release the results in the third week of February. But that got pushed to the end of February. Management aspirants and other business schools have questioned the inordinate delay.

The delay in announcing the results has come as a final indictment of the new online system. Now, it seems candidates will have to wait even longer.

Each IIM is yet to finalise the names of short-listed candidates whom they will call for the second stage (personal interview and group discussion), an official said. Now, the understanding is that students scores should be released and then each IIM can take its call and invite students for GD-PI, he added.
