AICTE may say no to courses without nod
Govt Cracks Whip On Unauthorised Schools And Colleges Offering Unsanctioned Courses
Mumbai: Beware, an MBA or BTech degree from an institute on which you have spent a few years and a couple of lakhs, may not have any value at all.
The latest data available with the All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) shows several institutes, offering degrees and diplomas for a range of subjects, have not bothered to get the necessary government approvals to run the courses.
The AICTE has now asked state governments to take action against the erring institutes, which have been running technical programmes without its approval. “We have asked states to take appropriate action as deemed fit by them. Letters have been sent to the universities concerned and the government,’’ said S S Mantha, officiating chairman of the AICTE.
All these institutes-around 134-are in New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Karnataka among other states. Of these, 57 that are conducting AICTE-unapproved courses, are located in Maharashtra.
The state’s capital has the maximum number of colleges -26- running courses that do not have the government nod. Some include Elphinstone College, Fort (diploma, PG diploma in HMCT, MBA in hospitality management) and Wigan & Leigh College College of India, Mahalaxmi (various PG programmes).
Many other colleges, which have been running courses with foreign collaboration are in the red. The AICTE has also asked the state to crack the whip on such colleges. TOI had reported about many of these colleges in an article dated December 6, 2006. A ministry-funded survey had found 66 American institutes, 59 British, two Canadian and one each from Australia, Switzerland and France operating in India in 2004. Barring two institutes, others had not passed the AICTE test.
According to AICTE officials, even after six years of serving notices, the college managements have not sought their approval. “There are 67 such institutes. Of these, Maharashtra has 19, including 14 in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad,’’ said Mantha.
Some of these institutes in Mumbai are Global Institute of Management Science, Santa Cruz, (degree and diploma in hotel management) and Kohinoor College of Management & College of Hospitality Management, Dadar (diploma in hospitality management, BA in international hotel & tourism management and BA (H) in international business.
Maharashtra’s head of the directorate of technical education S Mahajan said, “We will have to check each institution, its affiliation and see if any other body had approved the courses. Later, we will decide on the course of action. Depending on what norms are flouted, we will submit individual reports to the state, which will take the necessary action.’’
