Upset over CAT scores, students file RTI queries

Ahmedabad: The Common Admission Test (CAT) convenor's office at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has received a number of RTI applications filed by students who appeared read in the CAT 2009 exam. They are challenging their final scores of the test mired in controversy from the start.

CAT 2009, the first online version of the test, was full of glitches. After results were declared, students have expressed their displeasure over the process.

One of the applicants, Shubham Lahoti from Kota, has asked the institute in his application details like number of questions attempted, how many he got correct and the number of questions he got wrong. He has also demanded the absolute score without the psychometric equivalence. This style of evaluation was introduced along with the online test.

"The initial notice had declared that the papers would be of similar difficulty level. But after the exam, it has been mentioned that the scores were scaled, arrived at by establishing psychometric equivalencies to adjust for any variation in difficulty levels across the test. I have demanded an explanation,'' said Lahoti.

Abhishek Khosla, an RTI applicant from New Delhi, has sought to know the marking system, negative marking of each question and if there was differential marking adopted.

CAT convenor and IIM-A faculty Satish Deodhar said: "Five applications have reached my office. The questions range from asking for individual scores to questioning the need of normalisation. We will provide all the answers. We are a public institute and it is our duty towards the candidates.''

He, however, said it would be difficult to allow the candidates to see their individual tests and answers. "The only possibility we are exploring is of re-evaluation, like it happens in other tests elsewhere.''
