Guj IIT gets permanent address

Ahmedabad: It is official now. Gujarat’s Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will be housed in its own campus to come up at Palej. And, this will be a split campus.

On Tuesday, deputy director of Union ministry of human resource development, Ashok Thakur, visited IIT Gandhinagar campus and also the proposed site for the new campus.

Thakur, said sources, also held a meeting with senior officials of state’s education and revenue departments. Later in the evening, Thakur announced the new address of the campus before IIT students. Jubilation of students marked the announcement.

Since its inception in 2008, this IIT has been operating from the premises of Vishwakarma Engineering College at Chandkheda.

After much ado, the institute will finally be getting its own campus on a piece of land measuring 380 acre. Though, due to the pre-existence of Palej village, this will be a split campus.

This land had earlier been turned down by the IIT authorities here for they did not want a split campus. IIT-G was established in June 2008. The state government had given five options for the campus — Palej, Kalol, Sanand, Dehgam and Vagpur near Prantij.

Sudhir Kumar Jain, director of IITG, said: “Within the next two months we expect to get possession of the land. After that construction shall begin.”

“We had sought 500 acres of land. All the new IITs have been set up in campuses sprawling over 500 acre. The Bhubaneshwar IIT is spread over 936 acres, Hyderabad IIT has more than 500 acres and IIT in Jodhpur is also set up on 700 acres,” he added.

The IIT-G will introduce multi-disciplinary studies in the field of arts, pure sciences, humanities and engineering. It is poised to become an university in future, with living quarters for students and teachers along with open spaces, sports grounds and recreational area. Besides, it will be a 24-hour alive campus like the seven landmark IITs in the country.

At present, the Gandhinagar campus has 200 BTech students and 14 others pursuing their doctoral studies.
