Gujarati boy takes RTI route for CAT score

Becomes The First From State To Seek Re-assessment

Ahmedabad: Praveen Sah,a Vadodara boy, had pinned high hopes on the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009.This was his second attempt at cracking CAT and he was confident of doing well.

However, the normalisation of scores at CAT, in its new avatar, has left Sah high and dry. Now,he has joined the growing number of applicants filing RTI queries with the CAT committee to know what went wrong with their performance.

After a slog of nearly two years preparing for the test,Sah was confident of cracking at least one of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs),so much so that he did not even fill up forms for other management schools which accept CAT scores for admission. It was worse than a nightmare for me.Having been the top performer at my coaching centre and other national-level mock CATs,a score of 66 percentile.I attempted questions with great accuracy and know how many I attempted right, said the disheartened Sah.

His prime concern is the difference of 270 marks between the actual score of 180 and the 450 marks out of which the final scores have been given.

I filed my RTI application at the IIM-A on Friday.I have asked the institute to provide me my actual score and an explanation for the difference of 270 marks, with which they have normalised the scores. The test had 20 questions each in three sections, that make the total number of questions 60.With three marks each, the total absolute score becomes 180.But the marks that we got in the score card are out of 450.I have been asked to wait for a few days for the reply, Sah said.

Sah is the first CAT taker from Gujarat to file an RTI to know his absolute score and demand a re-assessment.The institute has so far received about 10 RTI applications of CAT applicants. Most of the queries are aimed at knowing the absolute score.Another chunk of the RTI applicants has demanded re-evaluation.Institute officials had earlier said that a re-evaluation can only be availed through an RTI application.

QUERIES NOT NEW FOR CAT

The IIM-A and CAT committee officials say that RTI queries are a routine thing after every years test, though this year the number is higher. The reason for this is that candidates have shown their disapproval of the online CAT,conducted for the first time this year.Another matter of concern is the process of normalising of scores that Prometric, the international agency appointed to conduct the test, has undertaken where the various tests were normalised and psychometric analysis was done before giving the test results.
