Prometric conducts re-run of CAT scores, says no change Ahmedabad: Prometric, the international agency that conducted the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009 for the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), said it had conducted re-assessment of about 10 candidates who had appeared in CAT.
These are the candidates who had filed an RTI application with the IIM-Ahmedabad. The CAT committee had then forwarded the request of reassessment to Prometric.
“We received the queries forwarded to us by IIM-A and conducted a re-run of scores of these candidates. There was no change in scores that was observed for any of them. The system is foolproof. It is only that the format of this 31-year-old test has changed and the new format has raised doubts in some people’s mind,” said Soumitra Roy, managing director of Prometric Services, India, in an exclusive chat with TOI.
Explaining the calculation of the CAT 2009 scores, Roy said, “The test scores were calculated in three stages. First, the raw scores were calculated where marks were awarded for what the candidate knows. There were three marks allotted for every correct answer, minus one for every wrong answer and no mark for questions not attempted. After the raw score is calculated, the same has to be adjusted to an alternate form where the scores for all candidates can be compa red, the process is called equating”.
“After equating, the scores are scaled. To ensure appropriate interpretation of equated scores, the scores must be placed on a common scale or metric. A linear transformation was used for this scaling process,” said Roy.
The candidates were provided four scaled scores; scaled scores for the three sections which will be between 0 to 150 and one overall score which will be between 0 to 450.
On being asked if Prometric considers CAT 2009 as a success, Roy said, “We are extremely sorry for the glitches that happened on the first three days and we can not offer an excuse for that, but after that, I would say, the test was conducted fairly and successfully”.
When asked if Prometric is conducting CAT 2010, Roy said, “I see no reason why Prometric should not conduct CAT 2010. We have got acquainted with system, we know the challenges and we have learnt our lessons. The IIMs or the CAT committee have not intimated any such thing to us. Instead, we are soon going to start the planning for CAT 2010.”
