IIM-A considers fee hike from June

Ahmedabad: The proposal of a probable fee hike came up during the meeting of the board of governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) on Saturday. The members of the governing council met on the campus before proceeding for the 45th convocation ceremony.

“A fee hike has been proposed, but the decision on the same is pending. The fee hike was proposed for the batch that will commence in June 2010,” said a source from the institute. Though the fee is usually put under a review at the end of every academic year, the increase said to have been proposed this year is from the existing Rs 12.5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh.

The institute increased its fees for its flagship, PGP course, in 2008 from around Rs 4.4 lakh to Rs 11.5 lakh, further increasing it to Rs 12.5 lakh in 2009. The institute follows a system of fee waiver where a student coming from a modest economic background is supported through scholarships or fee waiver. In 2008, 23 students studied with a 100 per cent fee waiver and there were 18 such students in 2009. The fee hike is essentially introduced for the PGP to replenish the exhausted corpus of the institute and to make the course self reliant.

Among other topics of discussion were the setting in of the foreign universities in the country and the threat that they pose to public institutes like IIM-A.
