IIMs need complete autonomy: Singhania

Ahmedabad: The board of governors and the authorities at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), have taken on the government once again, asking for autonomy in its true sense.

In the address to the graduating students, their families, guests and members of the press, the chairman of the board, Vijaypat Singhania as well as the director, professor Samir Barua, asserted that if public institutes like IIMs have to withstand the arrival of the better known foreign universities, they will have to be given complete freedom of operation.

“We need greater autonomy in functioning and running this institute,” said Singhania.

He added, “The Foreign Universities’ Bill proposed by the government would provide the same freedom of operations to the foreign academic institutions as provided to the private domestic academic institutions in the country. If this were to happen without the public institutions being unshackled from government’s restrictive controls then these institutions will not be able to compete with the better known foreign bodies”.

“The meaning of the word ‘autonomous’ is self governing. If IIM-A indeed is an autonomous institution, as agreed by the government, then it must be self governing, that is, governed by the board of governors. There is multifaceted, multi-pronged and unnecessary interference in the functioning and decision making on the institutes by various government agencies,” he further said.

Barua, while addressing the gathering said, “It is time for the government and the larger society to set IIM-A free from all government controls so that it can compete without its hands being tied against the foreign B-schools that are being allowed entry into India”.
