Most IIMs will hike seat intake this yr
Bangalore: The thousands who’ve cleared CAT 2011 just got lucky: their chances of getting into IIMs are much higher, as many institutes have decided to increase their intake. Of the 13 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) in the country, the newer ones will admit more students in 2012, with some likely to double the number of seats.
IIMs at Tiruchirappalli, Udaipur and Raipur will see a big increase in intake. Raipur, in its third year, is increasing the batch size for the first time from 70 to 120.The other two, whose second batch will be picked from CAT 2011, will also make it 120. Udaipur had 57 students in the previous academic year.
Among the six older IIMs, Kozhikode will hike the number of seats. “Though the scheduled intake was 300, the number of students admitted went up to 328 last year. This year, the target is 380-390,” said Anandakuttan B Unnithan, chairperson (admissions).
IIM-Rohtak plans only a minor change, to round off their intake of 124 to 130. IIM-Calcutta is planning to touch the 460-mark; IIMRanchi is yet to take a call.
However, the other bigger institutes like IIM-Bangalore, IIM-Lucknow and IIM-Shillong will maintain their earlier intake. The results of Common Admission Test are available on its website today. The exam was conducted over a 20-day window across 36 cities. Around 1.85 lakh students took the test. Of them, Bangalore had the second largest number of aspirants.
