XAT
Overview:
XAT is the gateway to XLRI and other affiliated Xavier
institutes like XIM and XIME. The advertisement for
XAT application form appears in late August. The entrance
exam is usually held on the first Sunday of January
and the interviews are in the month of March.
For more than 50 years Xavier Labour Relations Institute
(XLRI) is conducting Xavier Admission Test on All India
level to select the most appropriate students for admission
to their post-graduate degree programs in management.
XAT is usually held on the first Sunday of January.
This year XAT was held on 4th January 2009.
The XAT ‘09 was a 2 hour duration paper with additional
20 minutes given for the essay. The number of questions
was 120. The paper was divided into 3 sections viz.
Verbal Ability, Quantitative Aptitude & DI, Logical
Reasoning & Decision making.
250 – 300 word essays are expected to be written
with topics ranging from those of social relevance to
propositions to abstract. The essay topic in XAT 2009
was, “The inherent vice of Capitalism is the unequal
sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of Socialism
is the equal sharing of miseries”.
Apart from XLRI, there are around 42 management institutes
who subscribe to the XAT score including the likes of
XIM Bhubaneshwar, XISS, LIBA, GIM etc. The XLRI is ranked
amongst the top 5 B-Schools in India while XIM is ranked
among the top 20.
Paper Pattern: (XAT: January 4, 2009)
XAT 2009 had 104 questions as compared to 120 of last
year.
The questions were divided into 3 sections:
Verbal and Logical Ability
Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making
Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability.
Total Questions: 104
Time: 120 minutes + 20 minutes for essay
Marks allocation:
Correct attempt : 1 mark
Incorrect attempt : negative ¼ (for first 6 wrong
answers in each section), negative ½ (for subsequent
wrong answers)

In the last 20-mins students are expected to write a
250–300 word essay on topics ranging from those
of social relevance to propositions to abstract. The

Eligibility Criteria:
A candidate with a bachelors degree under 10+2+3 system
recognized by a university or a deemed university with
a minimum of 50% aggregate. A candidate in the final
year and seeking admission to XLRI can also apply provided
they complete their final year examination by June 10,
2009
Faculty:
XLRI has the best full time and visiting faculty from
the academics as well as from the industry. The faculty
present are the ones which are specialized in the specific
areas like Marketing, Finance, Communication, General
Management, and Information Systems.
Some Programmes Offered in XLRI: (by appearing for
XAT)
Personnel Management & Industrial Relations (PM
& IR): The programme aims to equip the students
with the knowledge and skills required for managing
HR in a way that contributes to the development of individuals
and organizations. The alumni are occupying senior level
positions in private and public sector organizations
and in multinational companies in India and abroad.
Business Management (BM):
The curriculum lays the foundation for conceptual and
analytical understanding of Indian and international
business. The course imparts knowledge and fosters attitudes
essential for the growth of students into competent,
responsible managers.
General Management Programme For Working
Executives(GMP):
XLRI has evolved a one year consolidated programme in
general management with the objectives of providing
the practicing managers a substantial exposure to theoretical
foundations in management as well as to provide them
a holistic perspective of business in such a way that
they are not only equipped with tools and techniques
to perform their task effectively but also to shoulder
greater responsibilities in the future as they move
up the hierarchy.

Average Domestic Salary – INR 14.75 LPA
Highest Domestic Salary – INR 32.0 LPA
Average International Salary – USD 90, 000 PA
