What is MAH-CET?
The Common Entrance Test - Maharashtra (CET) is conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education and is accepted by around 300 Institutes in Maharashtra.
Who conducts the MAH-CET?
Maharashtra - CET is conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education.
When is MAH-CET conducted?
The MAH-CET is generally conducted in the month of February. The GD and PI are conducted in May/June.
This year MAH-CET will be held on 27 February 2011.
Explain the CET
2011 paper pattern.
The MAH-CET comprises multiple choice objective type questions
Total Questions : 200
Time : Two and half hours
It tested the following areas:
Reading Comprehension
Verbal Ability
Logical Reasoning
Quantitative Ability
Analytical Reasoning
Mathematical Reasoning
Visual Reasoning
Data Interpretation
Data Sufficiency
What are the Salient Features of CET ?

This time also marking on OMR sheet had to be done
by Black Ball Point pen only.
Contents of the test of verbal ability and reading comprehension:
This is a test to see how well you know English language. In this test there will be passages with questions based on their contents to test your comprehension. Your English Language ability would be tested through questions on grammar, vocabulary, sentence completion, synonyms, antonyms, comprehension of passages etc. Your English language ability would be tested through questions on
(1) understanding of the contents of the passage and
(2) choice of appropriate words, phrases, expressions and similar language skills.
Contents of the test of quantitative aptitutde:
This test helps to know how fast and accurate you can work with numbers, do numerical calculations understand various arithmetic problems involving ratio and proportion, percentage, etc. This test also helps to measure your power of quantitative reasoning, interpretation of tables, common graphs and charts.
Contents of the test of logical / abstract reasoning:
This test measures how quickly and accurately you can think. This test may have questions based on figures and diagrams and also questions on verbal reasoning.
How was the 2010
CET paper? What was the structure?
“Difficulties mastered are opportunities won”.
The MAH-CET entrance was the last and final opportunity
that came along the MBA pathway. Despite the popularity
of other entrances like CAT, XAT, SNAP, FMS to name
a few, this time the response to the MAH-CET was overwhelmingly
astounding. This MAH-CET the last exam of the MBA
season was a momentous exam in your pursuit for an
MBA degree.
The Maharashtra MBA CET was held on 21st February 2010 continued
with a mix of all possible types of questions, testing
the accuracy and speed of the students.
There were a few sitters in the paper but thanks to
our series of PreCET papers and CET workshops, as
well as a ‘Live Chat’ with our mentors,
a few weeks prior to the final CET, our students were
aware of the strategy of smart browsing to spot and
solve most of the questions easily. To add on, our
PreCET-07 was at par with the actual CET paper.

Reasoning with words is how we can define Verbal Ability type questions. The colours English language can wear was very evident from this CET paper. The one and only one reading comprehension passage was easy on the eye. The theme of the passage was on the great Indian migration to the US.
The Cloze test and Fill in the Blanks had easy answer options.
The questions based on grammar were a cakewalk as there were no fundamentals involved. Everything was straightforward.
Definitely a score builder which is a throwback for a Verbal Ability section.
This CET had the standard questions which have appeared in the earlier CETs as well as in the PreCETs which many of you students have appeared for.

Quantitative Ability is just a misnomer for ‘manipulating numbers’. Questions or problems from this area are usually based on fundamentals taught over a period of time, right from school to college. Playing around with numbers is fun if concepts and grounding in pure mathematics is strong.
There was a strong leaning towards ‘arithmetic’ and ‘simplification’ questions .Many answer options for these problems had the right answer as ‘none of the above’ just to confuse a student!
Quantitative Ability based questions are more or less uncomplicated to solve but can at times be ‘time-consuming’ if they are calculation intensive, which was not the case in this CET paper. Questions were straightforward and fewer calculations were involved giving the student more time to concentrate on other questions from other areas.

Gleaning data from a chart or a graph with the data provided is data interpretation. Here skills of observation as well as analyzing are tested to the fore. Practicing such question types on a regular basis will build up your scores.
This area no doubt had fewer questions from that of last year’s CET and there were some DI questions which could be solved ‘eyes closed’! A definite score builder!
Data Sufficiency questions test a student’s ability to ‘reason quantitatively’. Here questions were based on concepts and fundamentals of ‘arithmetic’ and ‘numbers’.

Analytical Reasoning questions tests a student’s interpretational abilities from a given set of conditions or statements . Very often data has to be verified and then computed to reach the solution. The caselets based on ‘arrangements’ were the easiest to tackle.
Misscellenous Reasoning (Verbal) based questions mainly dealt with ‘cause and effect’ and ‘course of action’ type problems.
Critical Reasoning based questions evaluate the quality of a student’s thinking which is different from casual or routine thinking. Here no step by step procedures are followed; only clarity, credibility and accuracy are tested.
Attempting Mathematical Reasoning questions on a priority basis would have been the best strategy for saving time in this area.

Conceiving and manipulating objects in the mind’s eye before putting it down on paper is what questions based on Visual Reasoning demand. These question types were notably the difficult part of this CET paper. A manager is one who is able to discover the unexpected; provide timely, defensible, and understandable assessments; and communicate assessment effectively for action, so this is precisely why Visual Reasoning plays such an important role in many MBA Entrances.

Do I have to
be a graduate from a premier college?
No. It is not necessary that students need to be from
premier colleges. You get into a B-school on the basis
of your performance in the entrance exams conducted
by the B-schools themselves.
I have done my
diploma. Can I apply for an MBA?
MBA, being a master's degree, requires the aspirant
to be a graduate. That means, you must have a Bachelor's
Degree from any university incorporated by an act
of the Central or State government of India, any other
educational institution established by an act of Parliament
or any institution deemed as such under section 3
of the UGC Act 1956. This also includes any equivalent
qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government
of India. Your Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification
must have covered a minimum of three years of education
after completing higher secondary schooling, which
is a total of 10+2+3 years.

How does one
develop aptitude for Math and English? In
simple terms, CET tests managerial abilities in a
candidate through Mathematics and English. This means
that you will be required to interlink concepts in
order to solve a particular problem. Your ability
to apply concepts to practical situations is what
will be tested.
Once you start taking section tests and comprehensive
tests, it becomes important to analyze each of the
tests that you take. This will help identify the areas/topics
that you are weak at and still need brushing up before
you take the next test.
How does one
analyze performance? 1.
Analyze your area-wise/topic-wise performance to identify
potential areas for improvement.
2. Work on the identified areas, through determined
practice using

Concept Books

Section Tests and Comprehensive Tests
After you take each test, do analyze it well. Analysis
would take a lot of time, do not take this as a waste
of time, and instead convert this into a learning
process. For all correct answers, compare your method
with the Explanatory Answers, check if you can attempt
it faster and practice the new method, if any. For
all incorrect answers, reattempt the questions with
no time limits. You need to understand as to why did
you make the mistake was it conceptual/silly mistake/incorrect
interpretation. Learn from your mistakes and ensure
that you do not commit them in future.
How does one
increase reading speed and verbal ability?
The areas that are tested in English are verbal ability,
reading comprehension and composition skills. This
means that you need to build an overall aptitude in
English. Good command over English language is a must
in order to succeed in CET. In fact, you will observe
that you need good English even to attempt the quantitative
and data interpretation sections.
Reading a newspaper like The Times of India / The
Hindu, a business daily like The Economic Times /
Business Standard and political and business magazines
should become a daily habit for all CET applicants.
Further,

Read any section in the newspaper, especially the
editorial one.

Timing yourself while reading is important. You should
be able to read 200 to 250 words a minute.

Write a summary ( about 100 to 150 words ) every day
on the topic you have read. It will help in building
your thought process which is crucial in CET.

Make a note of the difficult words and look up their
meanings from the Oxford English dictionary. Try and
maintain a notebook/prepare flash cards
that you can go through in your free time.
Reading would also help keep updated on
the events going around thus building on your general
awareness that would be helpful during
the group discussion and personal interview rounds.
B-School Admissions Related:
How important
are my application forms?
It is very important to be honest in your application
forms. Do not fill any information that is untrue.
Certain questions in the forms ask you about Career
Goals, Strengths, Weaknesses, etc. They are deliberately
there to help the B-school know a little bit more
about you and are often referred to during the interview.
It is highly recommended to keep a photocopy of every
form that you fill so that you can revise what you
have written before the interview.
What do you mean
by percentile and percentage?
Percentile: Percentile indicates
student's relative performance position among the
total students who took the exam.
Percentage: The % score represents
normalized percentage of scores secured by the candidate.
It is a relative method of representing the score.
This is not the actual % score.
For example – A 99 percentile means that the
student is among the top 1 percent of the population
who took the exam.
Does a candidate
get calls only on the basis of cutoffs?
No. One needs to keep in mind that cut-offs are only
one of the many evaluation tools that the B-Schools
use to shortlist candidates. The other prominent factors
are past academic performance, work experience if
any, extra curricular activities and achievements
etc.
Does work experience
increase chances of making it to a reputed school?
Work experience is not mandatory criteria for making
it to any B-School. However, having work experience
does add to your profile. None the less, you need
to prove your worth at the time of the GD/PI rounds.
This implies that the panel needs to be convinced
about what you have learnt at the job and contributed
positively to the organization. The way you present
yourself and your approach towards the questions plays
a vital role in the outcome of your interview. Remember,
you will be pitched against the best minds during
the GD/PI rounds. So you need to be at your best to
make sure you get the final call.
What is the
duration of the test?
The duration of CET is 2 hours 30 minutes and
has a maximum of 200 marks.
What were the cutoffs for CET 2010?
