With a graduation
degree resting on your shoulders, you are at the crossroads
of your life contemplating on the various choices available
before you which will be a turning point, in making
or breaking your career. One of the many signboards
that beckon you is MBA. MBA- Masters in Business Administration.
Work Experience
As a student if you want to pursue an MBA straight after
graduation then the Indian system of education encourages
you to complete your Bachelor’s and Master’s
degrees before starting to work somewhere. However the
rest of the world does not agree with this straightforward
policy. The US, UK, Canadian, Australian and European
business schools insist on significant work experience
after graduation, with global business schools requiring
a minimum three years.
Many of you may view the MBA as a way to switch your
career paths. Those of you who have worked in the health
care industry, computer or engineering firms, and so
on can opt for an MBA so that you can achieve a managerial
position in your field. For instance if you are an engineer,
and have worked for years in routine hardware tasks
and now want a managerial position, then an MBA may
be ideal for you. Possession of this degree would tell
your prospective employer that you have the required
skills-you would be able to manage and lead teams, have
knowledge of business strategies and so on.
Length of an MBA Program
Another important factor which you should consider is
the length of the MBA programme. If you have sufficient
years of work experience and wish to get back to your
business quickly, then consider a one-year MBA programme.
Remember that the curriculum is extremely demanding
and you are expected to work for more than 10 hours
a day. On the other hand, if you can take things at
a more manageable pace, consider a two-year MBA course.
